OK, this is a follow-on from AjaTao42's post on cheats.
On:
wii-fit-plus-island-cycling-cliff-jumping-spoiler-alert-t568-10.htmlI call this type of cheat a "Death Plummet Cheat". "Death" for obvious reasons, "Cheat" because everyone knows these are cheating, and "Plummet" for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who saw Gonzo the Great in the parachuting scene behind the credits of The Muppet Movie.
There is a way to predict where they can be found, which is derived from how they appear to me to work. This way of predicting their location also indicates why some of them are easy to execute, and some are not.
Basically, it appears that you can find them on any cliff where there is something non-cyclable far below, nearer to the bottom than the top, although the definition of "nearer" is not 100% clear. Call this thing the "target". If from the top you can plummet so that you free-fall not to the cyclable zone below, but to the target, and you then fall from there to the cyclable zone, you respawn below rather than above.
So, for the four basic known Death Plummet Cheats that AjaTao42 posted:
* The Lake Trail Cheat - this has an easy target that you apparently cannot miss, right next to the Black Road, and the arrival direction is almost perfect.
* The Upper Cliff Cheat - this has a fairly straightforward target on the cliff below, and the only real disadvantage is that the respawn point, while nicely placed on the High Ledge, is pointing in the wrong direction.
* The East Upland Green Cheat - this is difficult to do, as AjaTao42 found, because the target is very small and its location is not clear. The trick appears to be to skim the cliff rather than go straight out over it. It is also less useful, because you respawn inside the tunnel pointing the wrong way.
* The South Upland Green Cheat - this is difficult to do, because although the location of the target is clear, the target is small and awkwardly shaped, so that a great deal of precision is required when riding off the upper zone. The target is the base of the outer leg of the Small Stone Arch over the path below, on the side facing away from the path.
So how many others have I found so far? Just one. There is a way to leave the High Ledge, down the Lower Cliff:
* The Lower Cliff Cheat - this is similar to the Upper Cliff Cheat, but leaves you in a more useful direction, pointing sort of vaguely towards the Big Bridge. You go over the edge just at the top of the fence, but the target appears to be smaller than the Upper Cliff Cheat's target.
It may be possible to leave the High Ledge over near where the balloon is, reducing distance and hence time taken, but my brief experiments this morning were not sufficient to find the jumping-off point.
My overall conclusion is that there are probably more of these cheats scattered around the island, and finding them will require the sort of geeky monomania that we appear to be good at. My next attempt will be to find a way off of Dog Rock (the overlook that dogs jump from in the Island Tour jogging route (the long one all the way round the island on the Black Road).
